WHY DR. SCHMIDT?

 

As a Orthopedic Oncologic Surgeon, Dr. Schmidt is affiliated with some of the finest teaching hospitals and medical centers in the Philadelphia area. 

 

Dr Schmidt has been practicing in his field for over 30 years. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in 1980. He completed his internship, orthopedic residency and research fellowship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1985. Following his residency, Dr. Schmidt completed an orthopedic oncologic fellowship at Shands Teaching Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

 

Dr. Schmidt is devoted to his patients and takes pride in delivering the highest quality of orthopedic surgical care possible. He works with other specialists as part of his belief in a team approach for patients with orthopedic cancer.

 

Dr. Schmidt is Chief of Orthopedic Oncology at Lankaneu Medical Center in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. He is a Diplomat of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Schmidt is also a member of the Pennsylvania Orthopedic Society where he has served as past president. 

 

Dr. Schmidt has served as: Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Lankenau Medical Center; President of the Medical Staff at the Lankenau Medical Center; President of the Medical Staff at Main Line Health; Medical Director of Orthopedic Oncology at Cancer Treatment Centers of America; and as an attending surgeon at The Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Dr. Schmidt is an internationally known specialist in the field of Orthopedic Oncologic Surgery. He specializes in sarcomas, including cancer of the bone and soft tissue. He is a recognized expert in the field of metastatic cancer to the bone and is best known for his expertise in the surgical management of limb salvage surgery and orthopedic reconstructive surgery. Dr. Schmidt also performs complex reconstructive surgeries related to trauma and degenerative conditions. 

 

In 1989, Dr. Schmidt launched a successful private practice in Bala Cynwyd, PA. For over 25 years, the practice has become one of the most recognized and successful practices of its kind, being recognized as a top doctor in his field by multiple publications including Philadelphia Magazine and The Main Line Times. 

 

Dr. Richard Schmidt believes in helping patients fight cancer by encouraging them to foster a sense of optimism and independence when it comes to both treatment and recovery. Dr. Schmidt doesn’t just help patients walk again surgically, he helps them move forward emotionally. He is dedicated to helping his patients become the “heroes” in their own stories.
