Dr. Schmidt was listed in Philly.com's "10 Philly Milestones in Surgical History" from The American College of Surgeons' "History of Surgery: One Hudred Years of Surgical Quality Improvement" for the 1st transplant of an entire human knee in 1987.

Dr. Schmidt specializes in sarcomas, including cancer of the bone, soft tissue, and metastatic cancer to bone. Dr. Schmidt also performs complex reconstructive orthopedic surgeries related to trauma and degenerative conditions. He is recognized for his expertise in the field for surgical management of limb salvage surgery. Dr. Schmidt is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Schmidt has been in private practice since 1989. He served as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at The Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, PA and currently serves as Chief of Orhopedic Oncology. He also served as Medical Director of Orthopedic Surgery at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA).
